Trolley Type Electric HVLP Spray gun - To Spray or Not to Spray

A common question I have been asked lately is should I use a paint sprayer for my project? After using it on our latest project - with great success - our predilection has definitely swung in favour of using a trolley type electric HVLP spray gun. But before you throw your rollers away and rush out and make the investment, here's a summary of the basics and a few key details to help you decide if it will be right for your project.

Why Use a trolley type electric HVLP spray gun?

1.     Using a trolley type electric HVLP spray gun is extremely quick to apply paint, far quicker than using a roller or paint brush. For our last project I applied a coat of paint to the entire house in under an hour on my own!

2.     An even paint coat and consistent finish. When used correctly a paint sprayer will provide you with an even and consistent finish to your paintwork. Although this comes with experience and may be arguable if it is better than traditional techniques when you start out.

3.     Paint sprayers can be used on a wide range of surfaces and finishes. Both on interiors and exteriors, smooth and rough materials - they are adaptable.

When to Use a Paint Sprayer?

Not all projects are suitable for using a paint sprayer and you need to decide if it is best for your job. I am intending to keep using airless spray guns in the future where we are doing a complete house and have time commitments, but I would not do so for every job, here's why.

Small spaces. Use a roller and brush. The additional time for prep may not end up saving you time. Occupied houses. If you're already living in your house, I would recommend sticking to traditional painting. Too much risk damaging existing finishes and time to prep to ensure you contain paint spray, and you would not get the benefits of scale as you would likely be painting one room at a time.

What Paint Sprayer should I Use?

Our experience to date has been with commercial spray guns - units which a professional painter may use. There is a wide range of smaller and cheaper units - which have their place - but I do not consider are suitable for painting an entire house on a quick timeframe. We have found over time with a variety of products you get what you pay for, so my recommendation is to use the real deal and spend a bit extra for quality.

On this project we initially shopped around and hired a cheap unit and while it looked adequate it didn't get through the first coat of paint and had to be returned almost immediately. To hire a professional unit is more expensive but will give you the assurance you need. We used a K brand FB14D-6 trolley type electric HVLP spray gun while we were on The Block and proved to be a fantastic choice.

When Shouldn’t I Use a Paint Sprayer?

There isn’t really an occasion where you should choose brushes or rollers over a paint sprayer. It is quicker (after set up), it is easier, and it leaves the best finish. The only occasion where using a paint sprayer rather than another method could result in issues is if you don’t have the correct respirator and coverings for the room you are in.

Without the correct safety gear, we wouldn’t recommend you use a paint sprayer. And you must use good quality dust sheets and secure them in place if you are using a paint sprayer. If you have everything you need, paint sprayer is always a good option.

Conclusion

Find out what you need for each task you have assigned yourself, in terms of knowledge, material and tools. Not having everything you need can bring a sudden standstill to your to do list and cause frustration that can be avoided. If you consider “there must be an easier way to do this” you are probably right in that thinking, it maybe you are using the wrong tool or just don’t know how to use the right tool in the right way.

When it came to your painting schedule, the decision to use a spray gun saved your painting time. You only needed to do a coat over the ceiling and some walls, as well as finish off the architraves and skirtings with enamel paint. There is more time in preparation, taping all the windows and removing doors, but easy and quickness of the spray gun makes it all well worth it.

Using a paint sprayer in the right manner can be a walk in the park for people who prepare thoroughly. It can be simple for detail-oriented folks who prioritize suitable protection techniques as well. You should never approach using a paint sprayer in a careless fashion.

HVLP spray guns work because they allow gravity to do all the heavy lifting, literally. These spray guns allow the paint to flow down through the gun where it meets up with a powerful stream of pressurized air, usually from an air compressor.

This air then propels the paint or mixture out of the nozzle in a precise spray pattern so you can get your job done easier, faster, and with ultimate precision. This process is often referred to as “atomization,” which just means that it’s turning the paint or fluid into a stream of tiny particles, propelled by air.

The heavier the fluid, the higher the air pressure needs to be to create the right spray. This is why HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) spray guns are often used to maximize efficiency rather than their siphon-feed counterparts. With gravity feed spray guns you get more paint on your project and less paint just wasted into thin air. That not only helps the environment but helps your wallet, too.

Choosing the right gravity feed spray gun all comes down to the projects you’ll be working on. Dialing in the right settings, finding the right nozzle size, and getting the hang of the gun you choose is only half the battle, so make sure you take the time to think about the features that matter most to you.If you plan to use a gravity feed sprayer for auto body work, make sure you choose a gun that optimizes your finish and works best with thinner fluids so you get the glossy shine you’re looking for.

And if you’re working with heavier finishes like stains and oil-based fluid, you’ll want something with a bit more spraying power that won’t clog or create splotchy coats that will delay your project. It all comes down to doing your research and then learning whichever gun you choose inside and out so you can get the best results possible and continue to improve your painting game as you go.

Painting cabinets can be tricky, but with the right HVLP spray gun that work can be cut in half by allowing you to spray paint rather than using a paintbrush. So choosing the right HVLP gun can not only save you time refinishing your cabinets, but can save you money by cutting down on your paint usage.

1600W K Brand Trolley type electric low- pressure spray gun is easy to use, even if you’re not an expert, and it has tons of adjustable features that make it a great pick for cabinet doors and smaller jobs too.If you want excellent paint control to reduce overspray and a new tool to add to your paint toolbox, this is the HVLP gun you need.

How Do HVLP Spray Guns For  Work?

Spray guns can make your life way easier if you’re a frequent painter or DIYer.But HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) spray guns take the cake when it comes to speed and precision. What once took you hours of laborious painting with a brush and a bucket can now take mere minutes once you get the hang of it.

HVLP guns work by atomizing paint using a low-pressure system that uses gravity to its advantage. The gravity pulls the paint from the cup down into the barrel of the spray gun, where it meets up with air being pushed through with an air compressor. The air pressure then atomizes the paint and propels it out of the tip to create a fine mist that you can control to get a beautiful, even finish.

This is why HVLP guns have a learning curve, though. You need to take the time to understand the settings required for your particular gun, as well as the project you're working on.For instance, if you're using a heavy fluid like a lacquer, you need to have a high pressure setting in order for it to atomize the fluid right.

This will result in less overspray as well as a more precise stream of fluid that will make it easier to spray on.But, if you're working with a thinner fluid, let's say a clear coat, you'll want to use a smaller tip like a 1.3mm in order to get the professional finish you're looking for. This takes so much of the headache out of paint jobs and makes it much easier for you to get a professional finish in half the time while also being more environmentally friendly (because you’ll waste less paint this way.)

How Can You Achieve Professional Results with HVLP Spray Guns?

First of all, to get a professional look and feel on your finish, you need to understand your settings.Using a professional-grade air compressor is a great place to start. You'll want to find the right psi settings for your particular paint and HVLP spray gun.Usually that's somewhere around 70 psi for normal paint.

Aside from the psi settings, if you really want that top-notch, professional look you'll want to plan on sanding the doors between coats. This is laborious, for sure, but if you want those cabinets to look great for years to come it's necessary. Professional painters know that the high quality finish is all about the little steps.

Another key step here to achieve a high quality result is to prevent any dust or lint from getting stuck on the paint before it dries. Not only will this not sand out, it will give your cabinets a rougher texture in the end. To do this, make sure you're letting the paint dry in one area and sanding in another. Ideally these would be separate rooms. This is because fine dust particles can linger in the air when you're sanding and that can cling to wet paint very easily.

You'll also want to use an air compressor tool to blow off any invisible dust that might be lingering on the surface before going in for the next coat of paint. All of these little steps are what will create the highest quality finish in the end.

So yes, while an HVLP spray gun is going to make the actual painting work much easier (and probably decrease dry times between coats) that isn't an excuse to cut corners.Make sure you're taking the time to not only let the cabinets fully dry before sanding them, but also to fully sand off any inconsistencies in the paint before putting on another layer.

Think of it like this: for every imperfection you leave un-sanded, it will be compounded by every coat of paint you add on top of it.That little scratch? That drip? If you put one or two more coats over the top of it, it's only going to stand out more. Going right along with that, as you're sanding, it's important to be super picky with your surfaces as you go. If you notice something like a piece of wood filler or a little knick or scratch, take the time to sand it off or otherwise eliminate it before you start painting!

The professionals know that to create a clean, crisp finish with your paint, you first need to prime your surface.Which means you need to be meticulous with your wood surface before you get started. That dent or scratch will most definitely be noticeable after you put 2 or 3 coats of paint over it. And no, you can't just "sand it off" between coats. Once you paint over it, you're stuck with it. So take the time to get up close and personal with your cabinets before you paint them and be as picky as possible.Even in those areas that you "won't see" on the insides of the cabinets. Attention to detail matters when you're dealing with paint.

Before you go in for that next round of paint, use a scrap piece of wood to test out your HVLP gun. Yes, every time! Why? Because you need to make sure that the paint is going to come out smoothly and evenly each and every time you spray your cabinets. One messy spray can ruin your finish.

If you've been at it for a while or you took a break to sand in between coats, the paint inside the canister could've settled into a goopy mess. But you won't know that beforehand if you don't test it out first! Sometimes you'll need to add fresh paint or test the consistency of your fluid between rounds to ensure that it's spraying properly.

And sometimes you'll need to clean the tip before you go in for the next round of paint because it'll congeal and have dried bits around the nozzle that will ruin your spray pattern. So before you make a mess, test, test, test!

What Are the Best Safety Practices for HVLP Spray Guns?

Obviously when you're working with any type of paint or fluid, there are safety concerns. But when dealing with HVLP guns it's essential to take proper precautions.Because the fluid being atomized and creating a fine mist, those particles have a much higher chance of lingering in the air, and thus making it into your airways.

Paint chemicals are not something to mess around with, especially when it comes to your lungs, because they can accumulate in your system in toxic levels and cause all sorts of health problems.

Before you get to work on your cabinets, take a moment to think about the environment you'll be working in. Do you have a garage or workshop where you can work that will stop the paint chemicals from accumulating in your house? Is that workshop well-ventilated? Take the time to create an environment that won't expose you or your loved ones to toxic chemicals while this project is ongoing.

Next, it's important to think about safety gear for yourself and anyone who is helping you. This includes things like safety goggles, gloves, and a mask made specifically for painting. You want to avoid any fumes, sanding particles, or atomized paint from making its way into your system, and that includes contact with your skin.
